• Check the photo-eyes. If the door just won’t close, look at the two sensors near the floor. Wipe off ice or cobwebs and make sure nothing is blocking the beam. That alone fixes a lot of “won’t close” calls.
• Know the red release cord. Read the next section before you pull it — timing matters.

How to use the red emergency release cord

Every opener has a red cord hanging from the rail, usually with a handle. It’s the manual release. Pull it and the door disconnects from the opener so you can move it by hand.

Here’s the part people get wrong. Only pull that cord when the door is fully closed or safely supported. If the door is partway open and the spring is broken, pulling the release removes the last thing holding it up — and the door can slam down hard.

So: if the door is down and you need to get the car out, pull the cord, lift by hand only if it feels manageable, and get clear. If the door is stuck open or feels dangerously heavy, leave it and wait for us. A trapped car is a smaller problem than a hand under a falling door.
